Community Arts Centre Roaring Meg Stevenage. Tutor- Dr Clare Nicholson The Short Story. 10 weeks.Cost £35 Starts Tuesday 10th January 2023 The Short Story is a literary form which has enjoyed great popularity but has been mostly considered by critics as less important or inferior to novels until the Canadian writer Alice Munroe was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2013. Many writers who enjoy fine reputations as novelists actually honed their craft in shorter fiction, such as Virginia Woolf’s short story ‘Mrs Dalloway in Bond Street’ which was later expanded to become the celebrated novel Mrs Dalloway in 1925. This course will look at a selection of 9 Short Stories written by women from the 19th century to the present day. We will include writing from Canada, USA and Australia as well as Great Britain, and we will discuss the characteristics of women’s short stories from questions of style and presentation to subject matter. In the final session we will consider whether the Short Story is simply a ‘failed novel’ or a distinct literary form with its own strength and identity. Dr Claire Nicholson is Chair of the Virginia Woolf Society of Great Britain and lectures for Cambridge University. |
